Motivational Difficulties @ Work?

Motivational Difficulties at Work

Lapses or a loss of motivation are relatively common problems.

It is also rather crucial because it is our motivation that helps spur us along the path to success generally. At best, without motivation work simply becomes automated. At worst it can impact negatively on our general sense of enjoyment and positivity and ultimately our health.

In helping people rekindle their motivation it is important to first determine the cause of the motivational crisis.

Motivational difficulties can be broadly classified into five main categories.

1. Low Self-Confidence

If you find the work difficult and don’t feel as if you are mastering it even after significant effort it is difficult to remain enthused. In order to be motivated we need to have some sense that the end goal is obtainable. With skill deficits we lose confidence and the end goals start to feel unobtainable. Understandably this is often accompanied by a loss of motivation. If we lack confidence to achieve our goals we end up feeling unworthy and this in turn can negatively affect our sense of self, the relationships we have with colleagues and can result in procrastination.

2. Low Expectations for Success

The messgaes we recieve from managemnet have an impact  on how we feel about work. For example if the message is around low expectations for success there is little motivation to strive for or work towards reinforcing goals. Similarly if we have low internal expectations for success we will simply perform at a manageable level with little purpose for doing more.

3. Lack of Interest in Subject Matter/ Lack of Direction

People exhibit motivation as an interest or a driving force that persuades them to take action. If you are interested you will be curious about a task and attempt to perform it well. Lack of interest can lead to decreased motivation and the failure to accomplish a goal.

Many of us begin our working life with firm goals for the future. As we mature and learn more about ourselves however these goals may no longer hold the same importance or relevance. We may decide that the initial goals are no longer consistent with what we want or we may become disillusioned with the initial goal as we learn more about where it will take us. In this case the initial goals are no longer motivating and until we find new ones it is likely that we will experience a sense of confusion about the future.

4. Fear of Failure

If we fear failure we may  avoid work that we lack the confidence to complete. This perceived lack of success is then internalised as failure which serves to confirm that we are in some way flawed. The more we fear failure, the less motivated we will be to perform work or attempt to accomplish goals because it is easier to avoid tasks than experiencing shame due to our failure to complete a task.

5. Physical /Psychological Illness.

In order to remain motivated towards our life goals we need to sustain an adequate state of health – both mentally and physically. When energy levels dwindle or we are fighting off infections it is difficult to remain focussed on our other goals. Similarly, many psychological problems directly affect our motivation . For example, it is well documented that one of the symptoms of depression is a loss of motivation and a decrease in general enthusiasm for life.

It is common to suffer motivational barriers over our working life… sometimes it is helpful to explore the underlying reasons and look for strategies to resolve things and move forward.
